We all have that one or two persons we admire professionally. Someone, whose work is a source of inspiration in our life. Someone who, for a long time we have wished we could have a sitting to pick their brains, get some advice and mentor-ship. But how do you get here? Coffee! There is power in a coffee meeting: great deals are struck, businesses are born and friendships are made over a cup of coffee. Even the traffic is tolerable over a cup of coffee!
It is a cheap and neutral way to meet. But first things first, you have to convince this person to have the coffee with you without looking like a total stalker after visiting their profile on LinkedIn for 20 times. Here are some pointers to a great coffee meeting:
Be straight to the point
Why, where and when you would like to have the coffee should be outright in your request email invitation.
Never be late
Time is a valuable commodity, and you are asking for a big chunk of it from this person. So make them feel the value and see the worth of it.
Do not be awkward
This is not a blind date date, so do your homework and get to know the person. This way you will have the right questions and examples straight from your stalking escapade. Do not be afraid to ask but do not also ask weird questions. Take advantage of the informal coffee setting and be free with the person.
Pay for the Coffee
Just because they are earning five times more than you are does not give you the right to pass the bill, unless they offer. Your invite Your Bill. PERIOD!
ALWAYS say thank you and follow up.
NB: Coffee meetings are an essential part of your job search and career growth. It is a wonderful powerful and portable social interaction. If you get to know what you want, it is an easy task: as easy as sipping it. So what are you waiting for? You can achieve over this one delightful cup 🙂 Enjoy
