Authority, toughness, combat, survival and sternness are the words that come to mind when the word military is mentioned. Having grown up in such an environment, toughening up was a way of life. I remember once i decided to indulge my sweet tooth with my school bus fare and walk home. “so you walked all the way home?” he asked. In an accomplished little soldier voice i said yes. And that my dear readers is how i got to walk to and from school for the rest of the year. I had proved I was tough enough to do it, so why waste fare? On the brighter side, no boy would dare bully me. The mere mention of my father being Jeshi (military) would do the trick. Once in a while, I would mention that he owned a gun, just to put things in place. I felt strong, powerful even. That also explains why it took me longer to have a boyfriend 🙂 The list of my little survival conquests is endless but I am glad I learnt how to camouflage even in the toughest of environments.
Speaking of which, camouflage, a style inspired by nature and mostly worn as military uniforms, made its way into everyday wear a long time ago, but it has made a huge come back in 2016 and in different hues; not just the mix of jungle and olive green. Its purpose has also changed from blending in to standing out. We have seen elements of these style on the streets and admired them from afar, too afraid/reserved to try. But when you consider the toughness associated with camo, you will realize that you need something that shows the world you are determined to beat all odds and achieve all that is possible in your rather active life.
Since childhood, wearing camo to me is not just a conformity to a trend but a show of strength and independence. If you think this trend is too masculine for you, try it in more feminine pieces like dresses, scarfs, pumps, tote bags etc. Wearing a pair of camouflage heels to the office, for example, shows that you mean serious business! It adds a hint of a tough girly edge to your outfit If you are looking to add some perfect punch to your everyday basics, try some camouflage pieces here and there to get that street swag too!!
